Era Presentations

Today, MOT1s at UTHSC completed era presentations. We were separated into groups and assigned a specific decade from 1940s-2010s. I learned so much about each era and how occupational therapy played a role in every decade. However, one concept that stuck out to me was women’s roles in the 1950s.

In the 1950s women’s occupations included the following:
- Cooking
- Cleaning
- Laundry
- Taking care of the household
- Taking care of the children

And while that list includes several activities and tiny tasks, it blew my mind that women weren’t working jobs, when in the previous decade they played a huge role in the workforce because of the war. It’s like women had to take a step backward for all the men returning to home from overseas. Luckily, in the following decades, women rejoined the workforce and started making changes within their fields, including occupational therapy.

The Mock Interview

As our didactic coursework comes to an end, we had the opportunity to complete a mock interview with a faculty member. Not only did this provide the chance to work on our resumes and cover letters, it allowed us to participate in the interview process where there were really low stakes. Because of this, I felt so comfortable during my interview. I wasn't stressed about if I would really be offered the job or replay what I said during the interview a million times. I was able to be myself and really focus on the flow of the interview process and receive feedback in a professional setting. Nutrition & Aging

Nutrition in older adults has become a serious issue within the medical field. I think we can all agree that nutrition at any age has an effect on your quality of life, mental health, physical health, and so much more. For older adults, their bodies process nutrients less efficiently, and when they are in hospitals or other healthcare facilities, their bodies are in “stressed states,” leading their systems to become hypermetabolic (increased metabolism) and catabolic (breaking down chemical reactions). In other words, their bodies are working overtime to try and return to its normal state, and to accomplish this, they will need increased caloric intake. While there has been much research done about the needs of a person when their bodies are malnourished, little is being done to actually take that research and use it to provide better nutrition to these older adults that are in hospitals, long term facilities, and even community-based settings.
